The 2023 IWMF Courage in Journalism Awards for Journalists and Photojournalists Globally
The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), located in Washington, D.C., is an organization working internationally to elevate the status of women in the media. The IWMF has created programs to help women in the media develop practical solutions to the obstacles they face in their careers and lives. The IWMF’s work includes a wide range of programs including international reporting fellowships in Africa and Latin America and providing grant opportunities for women journalists, research into the status of women in the media, and the Courage in Journalism, Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism, and Lifetime Achievement Awards. The IWMF advocates for press freedom internationally and often forms petitions asking international governments to release journalists in captivity and offer protection to journalists in danger.
The IWMF’s annual Courage in Journalism Awards honors women and nonbinary journalists who are exemplary by exhibiting extraordinary bravery, persistence, and resilience. Doing whatever it takes to uncover the truth, they raise the bar for reporting under duress, or in the face of censorship.

The awards program honors brave journalists – including photojournalists – working in any country across the world. They report on taboo topics, immerse themselves in hostile environments, and share difficult truths. Additionally, the honorees display a commitment to press freedom and often overcome unjust conditions online and offline to become leaders in their industry.
Candidates for the Courage in Journalism Awards must be full-time staff or freelance women or nonbinary reporters, writers, editors, photographers, or producers working in any country and of any nationality.
The Courage in Journalism Awards shows people that women journalists are not going to step aside, cannot be quieted, and deserve to be acknowledged for their strength in the face of adversity. It honors the brave journalists who report on taboo topics, work in environments hostile to women, and share difficult truths.
Each year, the Wallis Annenberg Justice for Women Journalists Award carries concentration to women journalists who are detained, jailed, or imprisoned. Many of these cases receive worldwide attention at the time of arrest but leave the public eye as new cases emerge. Sharing the stories of imprisoned women journalists is critical to ensuring the safety of women journalists.
