The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State with financing offered by the U.S. Government and administered by IREX. It is the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). The Fellowship obtains young leaders to the United States for the purpose of academic coursework and leadership training and builds amazing opportunities for Fellows and U.S. citizens to associate as they stimulate economic  growth and prosperity, support democratic governance, and improve peace and security across Africa and the United States.

In 2024 summer, the Fellowship will obtain up to 700 young leaders to the United States for a total executive-style program planned to build skills and strengthen fellows to rule in their separate sectors and communities.

Eligibility Conditions for the 2024 YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship Program

  • Considered readers are academics and/or professionals with expertise in one or more of the Fellowship’s thematic areas (business, civic engagement, or public management), or who have experience working in Africa or on sub-Saharan African issues.
  • U.S. Government employees and Fellowship Alumni are eligible.
  • Applicants for the 2024 Fellowship are not eligible to be readers.

Responsibilities

Readers will be responsible for assessing program applications based on fixed guidelines and a scoring rubric.  This is a wonderful volunteer professional development and résumé -building opportunity for professionals or degree-seeking individuals.

Reading Duration

The reading duration will commence on September 14, 2023, and will consist of up to three different reading phases, each one continuing for approximately two weeks, from mid-September through early November. Chosen readers will be designated to one of the reading phases to evaluate approximately 40 applications. Each application carries about 10-15 minutes to read and score; the total time dedication is evaluated at 10 hours.
