The 2023 Global Development Awards Competition (GDAC) is an international awards program that identifies outstanding research work and initiatives that have made a continuing impact on global development. The competition aims to encourage continued research and collaboration among individuals, communities, and organizations in pursuit of creating sustainable solutions to tackle the worlds most pressing challenges

The Global Development Awards Competition is an innovative award scheme founded by GDN with generous support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan.

Since its inception in 2000, GDN has granted roughly US$ 4 million in research and project grants to finalists and winners. About 8,800 researchers and development practitioners from low and middle-income countries and transition countries have partaken in the competition and more than 200 awards have been conferred to date.

THE JAPANESE AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING RESEARCH ON DEVELOPMENT 

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a unique competitive research grant program that recognizes and finance outstanding research proposals that possess a high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for tackling development issues. Applicants acquire expert feedback from junior and later senior researchers. In addition, throughout the implementation of their projects, the research teams are assisted by a Scientific and Technical Advisor, who is chosen based on the theme of their research.

THE JAPANESE AWARD FOR MOST INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT 

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP) is a unique competitive grant program that assists Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in low or lower income countries to identify innovative approaches to their projects.

Finalists in both categories receive training in communicating research and development, prior to their presentations at the conference.

TIME SPAN AND MERITS

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development

  1. The first prize winner would obtain a grant of US$ 30,000.
  2. The second prize winner would obtain a grant of US$ 20,000
  3. The third-prize winners would obtain a grant of US$ 10,000.

The funds will be used to assist the research work proposed by the winners toward the completion of their research. In addition, awardees will be paired with world-class academics in their area of work who will play the role of Scientific and Technical Advisors.

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project

  1. The two first-prize winners under each theme will obtain a grant of US$ 50,000 each.
  2. The second prize will receive a grant of US$ 25,000.

Additionally, awardees will be paired with a Technical Advisor throughout the entire implementation of the grant. The first prize winner is also qualified to compete under the Japan Social Development Fund for an extra grant of up to US$ 200,000 to pilot their innovative work at a more extensive scale.
