The 2024 Africa Innovation Mradi Research Grants for AI Researchers
The 2024 Africa Innovation Mradi Program (AIMP) was launched to help AI researchers working on projects connected to leveraging AI technology for solving social and economic issues in Africa. The objective of the program is to build a platform for researchers to develop innovative applications and products using AI technology for the benefit of African countries and people.
Africa Innovation Mradi Research Grants Will Examine AI’s Impact on the Continent.
As AI in consumer technology becomes universal, its relationship with society (both positive and negative) deepens. Though there’s a scarcity of research into this relationship, especially on the African continent.
Today, Mozilla’s Africa Innovation Mradi is opening up research grants of $5,000 to $10,000 USD to individuals or organizations exploring the impact of AI on the communities they work with in Eastern and Southern Africa. These grants will examine AI’s impact on human rights, economic justice, racial justice, community justice, gender justice, disability justice, LGBTQIA+ rights, and environmental justice.
For example, a grantee may research how algorithmic news feeds influence voters and elections in Nairobi.
A grantee may research how an AI chatbot brings legal services to the underserved in Johannesburg.
