The ITU Empowering Women in Spectrum Management Program

The ITU Empowering Women in Spectrum Management Program is an enterprise founded by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and also a PRIDA project which is a joint initiative of the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), and the ITU which has the objective of enhancing the African continent to reap the benefits of digitalization by addressing various dimensions of broadband and supply in Africa and building the capacities of AU Member states in the Internet Governance space. The ITU Empowering Women in Spectrum Management Program is to enhance gender equality and equip women in the field of spectrum management. Spectrum management is the process of regulating the allocation, assignment, and use of radio frequencies for different purposes, such as broadcasting, telecommunications, and satellite communications.

The program seeks to expand the participation of women in spectrum management, as women are underrepresented in this field worldwide. The program offers training and mentorship opportunities to women working in or desiring to function in spectrum management, with the objective of building their skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in this field.

The ITU Empowering Women in Spectrum Management Program presents a wide range of activities, not exempting training workshops, webinars, mentorship programs, and networking events. The program also grants access to online resources and devices that aid or help women in spectrum management to promote their careers. The training has two sessions. The first session of the training will take place in Yaoundé, Cameroon where a total of 200 young women will be selected from French-speaking countries in Africa.

Goal

  1. To train young women on spectrum issues.
  2. To develop awareness and basic competencies in spectrum management.
  3. To motivate trainees in their studies with spectrum issues.

Eligibility for the ITU Empowering Women in Spectrum Management Program

All participants must:

  • Be a young woman aged between 19-23.
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of their first university degree in Telecommunication Engineering, cybersecurity, IT, computer science, data science, and related fields. (Proof of enrollment will be needed).
  • Have a GPA of 3.5 and above (Proof needed).
  • Hold a valid passport.
  • Have an advanced level of French language.
  • Strong communication, analytical, and writing skills.
  • Be from one of the listed French-speaking countries:

Eligible Countries: Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Guinea (Conakry), Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Niger, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome, Senegal, Seychelles, Togo, Tunisia.

Candidates will be requested to provide:

  1. Contact information.
  2. Proof of enrolment.
  3. A valid copy of their passport.
  4. CV (up to 2 pages) in one of the two languages (English or French).
  5. Motivation for applying and expectations towards the training.
  6. Acceptance of the Terms and Conditions and the Code of Conduct.

The deadline for submissions is set for 11:59 pm EAT on 15 June 2023.

Timeline :

  • Application submissions close: June 15, 2023.
  • Evaluation process: June 16- June 30, 2023.
  • Announcement of the selection: July 1, 2023.
