The 2023 Environmental Photographer of the Year Competition acknowledges and celebrates the worlds best environmental photography, as a means of growing public awareness about environmental issues. Entries will be accepted from both professionals and amateurs worldwide.

Currently, in its 16th year, The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition displays the most inspirational environmental photography from around the world. The award honors humanity’s ability to survive and innovate and showcases thought-provoking images that call attention to our impact and inspire us to live sustainably.

The Environmental Photographer of the Year competition backs the urgent calls to action of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, identifying the intricate interconnected nature of development, poverty reduction, equality, security, and climate action and the unprecedented effort from all sectors of society needed to address the defining issues of our time.

ELIGIBILITY CONDITIONS FOR THE 2023 ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

  • Environmental Photographer of the Year Category is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages, from all over the world.
  • Young Environmental Photographer of the Year is open to photographers aged 21 years or younger.
  • You may enter previously published photos but do not enter photos that have already received an award or recognition in another international photography competition.

VALUE OF AWARD

  1. Environmental Photographer of the Year: The top award will be granted to a single photo that furthers people’s understanding of the causes and effects of environmental change and social inequality, highlights solutions to the climate and ecological emergency, and inspires us to live sustainably. This category is open to professional and amateur photographers of all ages, from all over the world. The winner will receive a £5,000 cash prize in addition to an interview in CIWEM’s Environment Magazine, a profile on WaterBear’s website, and a feature on Nikon Europe’s website.
  2. Young Environmental Photographer of the Year: In partnership with Nikon, this award showcases the best in environmental photography through the lens of young photographers aged 21 and under. This category recognizes rising talent and is open to photographers aged 21 years or younger. The winner will receive a Z Series Mirrorless camera and two NIKKOR Z lenses of their choosing, as well as an interview in CIWEM’s Environment Magazine and a feature on the Waterbear and Nikon platforms.
  3. Additionally, £1,000 cash prizes are awarded in the following four categories:
    • MPB Vision of the Future
    • Recovering Nature
    • Keeping 1.5 Alive
    • Adapting for Tomorrow

PROCEDURES FOR APPLICATION

The 2023 competition is available until 30 August. If any of your photographs are chosen for publication, you will be contacted by the end of October regarding next steps. The winners and shortlisted entrants will be declared in November.
