The United.b Circular Electronics Challenge is an initiative aimed at promoting innovation and sustainability in the electronics industry. It is a global competition open to startups and entrepreneurs who are developing innovative solutions that can help address the e-waste problem.
The challenge is organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and other partners, including the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The competition seeks to identify and support startups and entrepreneurs who are developing innovative business models and technologies that can promote the circular economy in the electronics industry. The focus areas of the challenge include:
- Design for circularity: This involves developing products and services that are designed to be reused, refurbished, or recycled at the end of their life.
- Responsible sourcing: This involves using materials that are environmentally and socially responsible, and that have a minimal impact on the environment and communities.
- Extended product life: This involves extending the lifespan of products through repair, refurbishment, and upgrading.
- E-waste management: This involves developing solutions for the responsible and efficient management of e-waste, including collection, transportation, and recycling.
Startups and entrepreneurs who are selected as winners of the challenge will receive a range of benefits, including funding, mentorship, and access to a global network of investors and partners. They will also have the opportunity to showcase their solutions at high-profile events and conferences.

How to ensure « de-pollution » and automatization of Electrical and Electronic Equipment recycling processes?
How can we leverage data to increase transparency in the product lifecycle and foster consumers?
Convince United.b and launch a financed Proof of Concept to start experimenting together!

During the Final Event Ceremony, you will have the opportunity to pitch at a major AU-EU Innovation event in front of United.b top executives and network with key players from the European and African innovation ecosystem.
The grand final will take place at the annual AU-EU Innovation Event in Cape Town (South Africa), bringing together key actors from the European and African innovation ecosystem. It is a unique opportunity to earn global exposure and seize amazing networking opportunities.
During the event, the 3 finalists will pitch their solution in front of a jury of innovation experts and top management from United.b.

- Application: March 6, 2023 – Apr 30, 2023, Answer a few questions & submit your 5–10 slides ppt deck to present your solution.
- Shortlisting: May 1, 2023 – May 14 2023 Projects will be reviewed and selected by United.b and ENRICH in Africa partners.
- Final EventJune, 15 2023: The 3 finalists will be invited to pitch at the AU-EU innovation festival in Cape Town.
