The MIT-Empowering the Teachers (MIT-ETT) program issues a sincere, semester-long teaching-focused arrangement for chosen cohorts of faculty members (ETT Fellows) from African universities. Through introducing the ETT Fellows to cutting-edge student-focused teaching methodologies the ETT aims to encourage innovation in science and engineering education in tertiary academic institutions in Africa.
The broad objective of MIT-ETT is to promote the development of young African faculty leadership in science and engineering education who will establish innovation and creativity in science and engineering curricula. The two major goals of the MIT-ETT program are:
- To prepare young African professors with exposure to cutting-edge pedagogical methods in the highest-rated engineering and science departments in the U.S.
- To provide American faculty who have a deep interest in connecting with those in their disciplines in emerging economies a concrete means of engagement.

The path to science and engineering education in African universities is yet to assume a focus on problem-solving, innovation, and creativity. Also, standards in these tertiary institutions have retreated because of severe neglect and lack of investment. Curricular and assessment practices have not embraced practices that promote critical thinking, open-ended problem-solving, and creativity, instead, they are still built around teacher-centered lecture rooms that concentrate on information acquisition, memorization and regurgitation at closed book examination. Consequently, these academic institutions have not yielded science and engineering graduates needed by industry to add value.
Program Objectives:
- Expose junior African professors to MIT’s advanced, problem-solving pedagogical methods
- Encourage the ETT fellows to become change-agents
- Allow the ETT fellows to expand their professional network, including MIT faculty with a deep interest in emerging economies.
During their semester at MIT, Fellows do the following:
- Observe instruction in their own disciplines & subjects
- Interact with MIT faculty teaching in their own disciplines & subjects
- Develop courses based on problem-solving approaches inspired by equivalent courses at MIT
- Discuss & explore curricular enrichment & reform through both formal and informal interaction with the MIT community
The highest goal is to improve their current curriculum using new materials, approaches, and methods that demonstrate the best of MIT’s practices: problem-solving, student-centered, innovation, and bringing knowledge to bear on the world’s greatest challenges.
