The 2023 Pulitzer Center/Diversity Photo Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant
The Pulitzer Center invites photojournalists to submit proposals for stories that concentrate on and explore the systemic and underreported issues in our communities, including but not limited to racial justice, climate change, environmental justice, gender equality, and human rights. The Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant is spread to photojournalists worldwide, with a preference for journalists functioning within their own local communities.
Pulitzer Center, established in 2006 and based in Washington, DC, has become a significant source of support for enterprise reporting on global issues and a creative leader in working with schools and universities to bring those issues into classrooms everywhere. The center currently assists over 150 reporting projects a year. Its work with the Associated Press covering the war in Yemen won a Pulitzer Prize for international reporting. Diversify Photo is a community of BIPOC and non-western photographers, editors, and visual producers operating to break with the mainly colonial and patriarchal eye through which history and the media have recorded the images of our time. Their curated database is used by editors at major media outlets seeking to expand their talent rosters.
The grant seeks to reveal visual stories about and by photojournalists from historically underrepresented communities.
Requirements for the 2023 Pulitzer Center/Diversity Photo Eyewitness Photojournalism Grant
- Applicants must be independent photojournalists from anywhere in the world, and applicants are strongly encouraged to apply with a letter of commitment from a news outlet with significant reach.
- In addition to DPxPC funding, they expect news outlets to contribute to the cost of reporting these stories.
- Applications must be received in English. There is no application fee.
Benefits
- Grants of $3,000 will be awarded to three applicants to support their visual reporting projects. As part of this year’s program, recipients will also have the opportunity to be mentored by other visual and photojournalists.
